Just in time for Mother’s Day, author Rebecca Van Slyke lets us all in on a well-kept secret … Want to know where terrific moms get their training? Why, at Mom School, of course!
Mom School is a delightful imagining of a school that trains its student Moms in the essential “Mom skills” that every child just can’t do without! (Well, except for the course in eating vegetables!) The curriculum includes a well crafted story time, tucking sleepy ones artfully into bed, learning to pitch a ball slowly enough for kids to hit it, pumping flat bicycle tires, making dinner while listening to children sing, erecting forts from couch cushions, and baking cupcakes. And importantly–moms should never be late for school, since they might miss instruction on how to bait a fishing hook!

Illustrations by Priscilla Burris are the perfect complement to Van Slyke’s whimsical story, with great attention given to details that make the story even more humorous and heartwarming. Her lovely artwork is as appetizing and coloful as the cupcakes that Mom School students bake! Moreover, her many examples of school life will invite shared experiences between parent and child–Moms ride the yellow bus to school, too!
Though mom may wear many hats and also work outside of home, Van Slyke reminds us that “Mom” is for children, her best title of all! The author has written a book that is a fun read for kids, but which may also become a special adult gift to mothers.
