Steven believes that any subject he is asked to illustrate demands the creation of the best images to tell the story in the most interesting way possible. He works in both traditional and digital media. Steven's storied career includes many awards, successful children's books, and work as an illustration teacher.

Your thoughts?

I’ve illustrated many natural science, religious and historical books and each time I try to bring a realistic view of the characters and setting while still creating interesting compositions. This story is based on facts that young people need to be aware of, so I welcome the chance to present it to them in this format. A sense of time and place is achieved by researching the period, late 1800s in this case. The situations are not overly decorative or colorful in order to give a feeling of what the characters are up against. The illustrations are digital watercolor, using Adobe Photoshop and some brushes I created in the program.
